Castilleja latifolia, commonly known as Monterey Indian Paintbrush, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the coastal regions of California, typically found on sandy soils and coastal bluffs. It grows 30 to 60 cm tall with slender, branching stems that support narrow, lance-shaped leaves. The plant is renowned for its striking inflorescences: brightly colored bracts in shades of red, orange, or scarlet surround smaller, less conspicuous tubular flowers, creating a vivid display that attracts hummingbirds and other pollinators. Castilleja latifolia is a hemiparasitic species, obtaining some of its nutrients by attaching to the roots of nearby host plants, which allows it to thrive in nutrient-poor coastal soils. It prefers full sun and well-drained sandy soils and is highly tolerant of the coastal wind and salt spray. Its vibrant color, ecological role in supporting pollinators, and adaptation to harsh coastal habitats make it a distinctive and valued plant in native wildflower gardens and restoration projects. Germination
To germinate Castilleja latifolia, begin by cleaning the seeds thoroughly to remove any debris or pulp. The seeds will often benefit from a period of cold stratification to break dormancy and promote germination. Place the seeds in a moistened medium, such as peat moss or vermiculite, and store them in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 weeks. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining, sandy soil mix, lightly pressing them into the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide bottom heat or maintain a warm, bright location with temperatures around 60°F to 70°F (15°C to 21°C). Germination typically occurs within 2 to 8 weeks under these conditions. Once seedlings emerge, provide them with adequate light and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before transplanting into their permanent garden location. By following these steps, The seeds will germinate reliably, eventually producing vibrant, colorful blooms that are characteristic of this unique wildflower species.
